Obituary of Gladys L. Schurle

Gladys L. Schurle, age 98, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2017 at the Leonardville Nursing Home. She was born on November 25, 1918 at Keats, the daughter of Henry and Lydia (Oberhelman) Funk. She attended Silver Creek Grade School and Keats High School. She gained her Registered Nurse License at Park View Hospital. She worked for area hospitals in Wamego and Manhattan, as well as a private duty nurse. She was a member of the Keats United Methodist Church, Silver Creek Beneficiary Club and the Kansas Jersey Cattle Club. On October 16, 1941, she was married to David M. Schurle at Cottonwood Falls by Rev. Patterson, a former Keats pastor. He preceded her in death. David and Gladys purchased a farm west of St. George where they started milking Jersey cows and Gladys worked at the Genn Hospital in Wamego. Following the flood of 1951, they purchased David’s home place west of Keats and together established and operated Rose L. Mar Jerseys. This dairy herd would serve to show their dedication and hard work for their cows by the numerous national awards for milk and butterfat production for over 20 years. Gladys was the caretaker for the calves, but was always ready and able to step in to milk the cows and any other job that needed to be done. Gladys’ other love was her yard and she spent countless hours taking care of it. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Lillian Hand and four brothers, Edwin, Norman, Leo and Maurice Funk. She is survived by one daughter, Glenda Holmes and husband Jeff of Riley; one grandson, Jay Holmes and wife Lindsay of Riley; one granddaughter, Alison Moore and husband Jesse of Riley; four great grandchildren, Tyler and Caysen Holmes and Adalyne and Dixie Moore, all of Riley and numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 6, 2017 at the Riley Cemetery with Rev. Bill Eisele officiating. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the Keats United Methodist Church. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
