Obituary of Arlene Ulrich-Kaump
Arlene Ulrich-Kaump, age 84 of Manhattan, Kansas, our beloved sister, sister-in-law, and aunt to many nieces and nephews, lost the battle with multiple melonoma and amyloidosis and entered the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Sunday morning, November 24, 2013 at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community.
She was born on September 1, 1929, the daughter of Clifford Merrill and Ethel Fernanda (Swenson) Ulrich. The Ulrich family lived near Eudora, Kansas until 1935 and moved to a farm north of Randolph, Kansas in the Rose Hill Community. The Ulrich’s spent three years in southern Minnesota and returned to Kansas in 1941 where Arlene graduated as class valedictorian of Randolph High School. She enterd Kansas University and graduated with a degree in microbiology. After time as a medical technologist, she entered the University of Texas and earned a masters degree in microbiology. She received a Federal Grant and earned a Phd in microbiology at Kansas State University. Following her graduation she did post-doc research involving phage bacteria. She went on to teach at Kansas State Teachers college and continue research on phage bacteria hybrids. She was then appointed head of the Department of Microbiology at the Kansas State Board of Health.
Arlene resigned from that job in order to care for her mother who was failing in health. During this time she met and fell in love with Glen Kaump, a successful cattle rancher, farmer and Christian man. They were married in 1979 and lived in the Swede Creek community north of Randolph. She described this as the happiest and most satisfying time of her life.
Many friends from Grace Baptist Church showed much love and thoughtfulness to her bringing encouragement and good Christian fellowship throughout her long struggle as a virtually immobile shut-in.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Glen Kaump and her brother Robert Merrill Ulrich.
She is survived by one brother, Duane Ulrich and wife Janet of West Hills, California and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 7, 2013 at Grace Baptist Church in Manhattan with Pastor Bob Flack officiating. Music was furnished by Carmen Schwenk. Burial was in the Swede Creek Cemetery north of Randolph, Kansas.
A Memorial Tree was planted for Arlene
