Obituary of Charles Edward Meyer

Charles Edward Meyer, age 91, passed away at his home in Manhattan on December 15, 2014. Charlie was born on June 1, 1923 in Leonardville, the eighth of nine children and son of Charles and Minnie (Nelson) Meyer. He spent his formative years in Leonardville and graduated from high school there in 1942. He served in the United States Navy as a Seaman First Class from 1943-46 during World War II on the USS Hector and Owens in the South Pacific. After the War, Charlie trained as a master craftsman carpenter and also a master craftsman upholsterer in Kansas. He married Bertha Mackender in Leonardville on February 20th, 1949. They built four houses in Manhattan while Charlie began a career as an upholsterer. He owned and operated Meyer Upholstery in Manhattan from 1957-85. He sang in a local barbershop chorus, the Tuttleaires for many years. Charlie loved his family, horses, pugs named BoJo, playing pitch, singing songs, going dancing, telling a funny story, and doing good work well. His jovial spirit has touched many lives. Charlie is survived by his wife Bert; his children, Charles Meyer and wife Susy, Pam Henning and husband Leo; his sisters, Opal Hayden and Patricia Ward; and his grandchildren, Kate, Anna, Jacob, Charles, and Colby. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, December 19, 2014 at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, with Pastor Kevin Larson officiating. Respect calls may be made anytime Thursday; the family will receive friends from 6 - 7:00 P.M. that evening. Burial will be in the Leonardville United Methodist Cemetery, southeast of Leonardville. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Homecare and Hospice of Manhattan. Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley.
