Obituary of Dwight Sherbert

Dwight Sherbert, age 70 of Clay Center, Kansas, died November 2, 2014 at Presbyterian Manor in Clay Center. He was born on January 19, 1944 at his family home in Broughton, Kansas, the son of Akin and Mary (Townsend) Sherbert. He graduated from Clay Center Community High School in 1962. On October 19, 1963 at Wakefield, Kansas, he was married to Marilyn Kay Elsasser. She survives of the home. Dwight was a farmer and stockman. He was a charter member and lifetime member of the Clay Center FFA Alumni, life member of the Linn American Legion, helped form and was the treasurer for the Morganville Rural Fire Department, served 24 years as a board member for the Morganville COOP, served 12 years as the clerk for the Sherman Township and was on the Gatesville Cemetery board. He enjoyed participating in tractor pulls when he was younger. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Mike Sherbert and Robin of Morganville and Greg Sherbert and Wendy of Clay Center; one brother, Bill Sherbert and Phyllis of Chapman; six sisters, Ruth Annis and Maurice of Oakley, Jan Waters of Phoenix, Arizona, Del Furrer of Washington, Ann Smith and Mike of Peoria, Arizona, Sue Cruz and Paul of Lorenzo, Texas and Kay Kreifels and Dennis of Syracuse, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Courtney, Colby, Lane and Joshua Sherbert; a father in law, Lester Elsasser and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, Jeffrey Sherbert; a half brother, Melvin Sherbert; two half sisters, Ethel Luthi and Velma Handley and his mother in law, Nettie Elsasser. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday, November 7, 2014 at the Clay Center United Methodist Church with Pastor Ryan Lynch officiating. Respect calls may be made anytime Thursday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home in Riley, where the family will receive friends from 5:30-7:00 P.M. Thursday. Burial will be in the Gatesville Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Wakefield Museum and Clay Center Presbyterian Manor.
