I was so saddened to hear of Verne's passing. I have enjoyed his friendship and fellowship over the last almost 45 years, and it will leave a hole in my life that can never be filled. I know that I will see him again when the time comes.

To the Hart Family with my deepest condolences:
I became aquainted with Verne when I began my employment with the Kansas Parks & Resources Authority in 1979 working in the New England Building in downtown Topeka. As a young man Verne profounding influenced me in my personal life as well as my career. I proudly place him on that short list of "one of the most significant men in my life". I was a young man awe struck by someone I respected immeasurably and I was eager to learn all I could from him. Verne recipricated by mentoring me, giving me my start as a State Park Ranger at Pomona and ultimately aiding me in obtaining my position as State Park Manager at Clinton. I never forgot his lessons and often thought of how he may have handled situations I was faced with later in my career. I was greatly saddened by our loss in my learning of his passing. The strenght of his handshake, the booming tone of his voice and his hearty laughter will never leave my heart. The passing of good men leave large holes in our lives we try desperately to fill; great men fill those holes in ways that shape our lives before they ever leave us. "I miss you my friend!!"

We are very sorry to learn of Vern’s passing. Vern and Gloria have been family friends for more than 50 years. My father worked for and with Vern, starting in the early days of the Kansas Park and Resourses, and they were good friends until my father passed away. Since then Vern was very faithful to call my mother regularly, and Gloria has been equally good at writing to her. I remember many good times with Vern when he, my dad, my uncle and other of their buddies would get together to hunt birds, usually pheasants or prairie chickens.
All the best to Gloria and to their families. May God bless them.

I was so sorry to learn of Vern's passing. He is a very special friend. Vern and I had common interests in classic cars, vintage tractors, and all things mechanical. I always looked forward to visiting with Vern at his work shop. We also shared a passion for the outdoors, sports and family activities.
We often had long talks about many subjects in his shop, or during meals together with many of Vern's friends. It seems that there were different lunch specials at different dining establishments in Manhattan every day of the week. It was a regular dining circuit. We took advantage of those specials!
The more I got to know Vern the more I was impressed with his career accomplishments and his high level political connections. Not that he was bragging, the information just came out as a sidebar to the stories we shared. I was interested to learn that Vern was the first State Park Director at Kannapolis. That reservoir provides water to my wife's family farm in Natoma Kansas.
Vern told me how he combined his interest in tractors and his job as State Parks Director to figure a way to bend galvanized pipes on a tractor wheel to make artistic and sturdy state park benches that are still being used throughout the state.

Dear Hart Family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Verne was a truly wonderful person. Over the many years I have always enjoyed any encounter with Verne and the conversation that ensued. I will miss his laugh and chuckle, he was a master at seeing the positive in all things. Verne made our world a better place. No doubt that Heaven just became a little better place for all those that have gone before us.
I hope to see him again someday!!
Gloria, Steve and Family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
May God Bless and comfort you during this difficult time.
Peace be with you,
Jk

I met Vern when we worked for the Kansas Park and Resource Authority. He was one of the best supervisors I have ever been around. When asked a direct question you could always count on a direct answer that would not change over time. I always appreciated this. He was also a great leader and a stand up guy who cared about his people.
My sincere condolences to Vern's family and I know he will be deeply missed.
