Obituary of Elizabeth Glowacki
On Wednesday, September 26, 2018, Elizabeth Glowacki, loving grandmother/great grandmother, and friend to many passed away just as she had hoped. She was surrounded by friends, laying in her bed in the comfort of what she saw as her true home. Her mind sharp as a tack to the last minute, she was able to laugh, reminisce, and connect with those closest around her.
Elizabeth was born on August 3, 1923 in Czech Republic and lived a “turbulent life,” as she would often say in her thick and beautiful German accent. Often over a cup of coffee, she would say she had “more than enough” and would tell countless stories of only the good times.
She fell in love with Leo Glowacki, an American Sergeant, who served in four wars; she was his biggest cheerleader. During WWII, despite not speaking any English, Elizabeth sailed to America with her two-year-old son, William, to begin her new life. She considered America her country and was able to travel to every state in the lower 48, making sure to stop at every museum, read every plaque, visit every memorial and relish at all the beauty.
Elizabeth’s spirit for life was contagious. She enjoyed culture, history, intelligent conversations and challenging those closest to her to always find the truth. She was an excellent steward to the Manhattan, KS community acting as a matriarch to the needy, delivering food and supplies to friends, and being the best of friend to many. Her love of knitting kept her busy, even into her last week on earth. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people around the world tonight will be snuggled up in her warm socks, blankets or scarfs. She had a giving soul.
She is survived by her grandchildren and great grandchildren: Casey (wife Rachel, great grandchildren Liam and Grey); Corbin (wife Dana); brothers, Mundi Schneider, Frantisek Zlik; dear friends like sisters, Hildegard, Shelly, Chris who were by her side as she reunited with her husband, Leo and her beloved son, William for eternal peace; many friends and family around the world who have been touched by her love and friendship. The world was a better place with Elizabeth Glowacki in it, she will be deeply missed. “Have you ever seen a clock go backwards? No, neither have I!” Her spirit will live on in our hearts.
A memorial service will be at 1:30 PM Sunday, October 14, 2018 at the Via Christi Village Chapel, 2800 Willow Grove Rd, Manhattan, KS. Private inurnment will be at the Fort Riley Post Cemetery, Fort Riley, KS at a later date. The Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
