Obituary of Leland Lund

Leland Lund, age 93 of Clay Center, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2018 a few days before his 94th birthday.

He was born November 7, 1924 to Ludwig and Ida Lund of Green. He grew up on their farm near Green working on the farm as a boy and young man he also learned carpentry work from his father.  He attended Pleasant Hill grade school and graduated from Green High School in 1943.  He also worked for several farmers before buying his own farm north of Clay Center.

He was a member of the Alert Covenant Church which was started by his grandparents. He learned to love the Lord from his parents and attending church his whole life.  He was an active member of the Green VFW for many years and also a member and officer in the National Farmers Organization.  Other groups he was involved in were the Iwo Jima Veterans and  the American Legion.  Leland served on the Morganville Rural Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Rural Water District #1.

Leland proudly served in the US Navy from 1944-1946, being assigned to the ship USS Rooks DD#804. He was a Machinist Mate 3rd Class and mostly worked in the engine room creating fresh water for the ship. His ship was at the battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa.  They took prisoners of war onto their ship at Nagasaki and were also assigned to mine sweep duty in the East China Sea.

After the service, he married his sweetheart Marion Naslund in Clay Center on October 9, 1949.  They enjoyed 64 years together before her passing in 2014.  They enjoyed farming together and raising their 2 daughters Carmie and Kim.  He taught the girls many life long skills on the farm.  Leland was a hard working farmer and stockman, he raised cattle, wheat, hay, milo and soybeans.

Leland was also an excellent carpenter, building and remodeling many houses in the Green and Clay Center areas.  He rebuilt his own house after it was destroyed by a tornado.  Since he was always busy working he didn't have time for many hobbies but he enjoyed telling WWII stories and reading articles and books about WWII. After leaving the farm, he spent the last 2 years of his life at Medicalodge of Clay Center, where he was lovingly cared for by their staff.

He is proceeded in death by his parents; his wife, Marion;,  one sister, Maxine McGuire and two brothers, Waldon Lund and Maurice Lund.

He is survived by his sister, Lorene Visser; his brother, Elmo Lund, two daughters Carmie & Bob Pfenning of Galeton, CO and Kimberly & Craig Hay of Liberal; four grandchildren, Nick & Kristin Pfenning of San Francisco, CA, Lindsay & Paul Pearson of Galeton, CO, Joshua Hay of Kansas City and Shelby Hay of Manhattan; two great grandchildren, Joy and Ethan Pearson and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 7, 2018 at the Alert Covenant Church with Pastors Dwight Diller and Kevin Larson officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Swedish Pleasant Hill Cemetery, north of Clay Center.

Memorials may be made to the Green VFW and left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.
