Charles was a good friend of mine. I knew he was in a care facility and I tried to call him. I never got to talk to him, no one would answer the phone. The last time I talked to Charles was the last reunion we had at the church in Keats before Covid.
We lived very close, he was on the farm east of us and we would exchange work in the summer, mostly bailing alfalfa. I remember we were trying out a 30-06 in our down time one summer day and we we’re having target practice on old dead tree across the valley. Some of the ammo would light up so you could see where they were striking. We didn’t want the rifle to get hot so we took breaks often. After one of our breaks we took aim at the old tree and the hill was on fire. I believe there was two Lober’s and three Schurle’s that took a Ford tractor to the location of the fire and we worked our butts off to it out. We new it would be trouble if the fire would spread. We didn’t test any rifles like that again.
Charles and I had our differences but we remained friends. I will miss him.
